We started talking about Groundhog Day today and shadows.  I was very amazed with everything students already knew about shadows and groundhogs! I can't wait to continue discussing this interesting phenomenon this week. We will make  predictions about the groundhog on Wednesday! I cannot wait to find out if he sees his shadow! We are going to be writing a letter to Phil letting him know everything he has missed while he has been hibernating!

The copy machine was not working on Friday, and I was not able to print the First Grade Preview. I am hoping it will be fixed today and I will be able to print the letter!

I apologize for not keeping up with my blog.  I have been staying busy in the classroom with grades, activities, RTii, and many other things.  I promise to get back into the groove and post more often.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns,etc...

·         There is no school on Monday to a teacher clerical day.
·         Don’t forget to bring in Box Tops! The class who has the most Box Tops receives a donut party.
·         Class pictures will be on Wednesday!
·         Report Cards will be going home on Friday. Please sign the envelope and return it to school. The copy of the report card is yours to keep.
·         We have a student teacher coming on Tuesday! Her name is Mrs. Allen and she will be a great addition to our classroom! If your child is looking for a craft over the three day weekend, I would suggest that they make her a little card welcoming her! J
·         Please send gloves to school with your child next week. I know they often lose them, but we are going to do some activities with snow and it will be uncomfortable for them to touch it without gloves. (This activity will take place in the classroom!)
·         On Friday, we are going to have a snowman birthday party! I will send more information on Tuesday. We will need large marshmallows (snowballs), mini-marshmallows, chocolate milk (since snowmen can’t drink hot chocolate!), and vanilla ice cream cups. If you are willing to send any of these items, please let me know! Thank you very much!

We had a great day today! We took our spelling test, reading comprehension test, and completed several Gingerbread activities.  I am very impressed with the creative Gingerbread Man stories students wrote! Ask your child to tell you about the egg cracking experiment we did when we talked about Martin Luther King.
Have a wonder long weekend!

You and your family are invited to scurry over to Petco for Meet the Critters on January 14th and 15th. This event will feature educational interaction
with a variety of small animals including hamsters, betta fish, leopard geckos and parakeets!
The fun-filled weekend will teach: • Which animals make great first pets • What pets are good for children and families • How to care for small animals

We had a lot of fun today completing Gingerbread Man activities! We ate a cookie and graphed our first bites! We watched him dissolve in water and figured out why he was willing to get help from the fox! It wouldn't have been a very good thing for him to swim in the water!  We wrote stories about where we would run if we were the Gingerbread Man! Ask you children what we had on the big screen while we wrote! We'll just say it made us feel much warmer! If you go to http://www.blazinglogs.com/  you can check it out!

We made our very own "magic e" vowel sticks today. Your child is coming home with a paper that has CVC words written on it. Ask them to read the new word that is made if they put their "magic e" vowel stick on the paper.

Have a wonderful evening!

Officer Phil/Gingerbread

Today, we started DIBELS testing and we will be finishing this week. Most kids did a very good job! I am excited with their results. We talked about the minute hand and hour hand in math today. Every time we see the minute hand on the twelve, we say, "O'clock!"

There was an Officer Phil program this morning.   It was really funny!  We learned about making good choices when we are at home, at school, and everywhere we go.If you go to officerphil.com and send them an email indicating your child attended the assembly today, they will send you a poster and trading cards with the characters from the program this morning.

Tomorrow, we are going to put a gingerbread cookie in water and see what would have happened if he tried to swim! If you have any copies of other versions of  The Gingerbread Man (The Gingerbread Boy, The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Girl, etc..) feel free to send them to school with your child. Please write your name inside so I make sure they are returned to their rightful owners!

We had a wonderful day today. There is so much to do during the month of January! We continued to discuss fractions and talked about what we like to bake. I was impressed with how many students seem to know how to bake!

Tomorrow we have an Officer Phil assembly. This is always an enjoyable assembly!

Please remember to work on the Gingerbread Man project! I cannot wait to read all of the creative ideas you and your children come up with!

We had a wonderful week back! I'm excited for many of the activities we have ahead of us this week. We are reading The Gingerbread Man in reading and have some fun Martin Luther King activities to complete Friday.  This week is the big week we will be starting to learn about long vowels! You will be hearing your child talk about the "magic e."  Please continue to draw attention to the contractions you see in stories and print of any kind. This can be a difficult concept for students to grasp.

Remember, Scholastic orders are due tomorrow (Monday).

I'm a little concerned about this Steeler game! I do like Tebow, but I would obviously prefer for the Steelers to win! We have some fun Steeler activities I would still like for us to get to complete! :-)

Welcome Back!!!!

I have to be honest, I thought it was going to be difficult transitioning back after the break, but we had a great day! We did a lot of work and had a lot of fun. It was so interesting to hear about students' favorite Christmas gifts and all of the fun things they did over the break!

Today, we read a story called Squirrel's New Year's Resolution and talked about some resolutions we could try to make.  We started talking about contractions.  We completed a magical contraction activity on the SmartBoard! Please review this concept with your child.

Don't forget about our math test on Friday! I will be updating Spelling City in a few minutes!

 Have a great night!
